As the year winds down, I’ve been reflecting on a transformative journey. One that’s pushed me to step into my full power, embrace my worth, and chart a bold path forward into 2025. This journey demanded I recognize the value I bring to every project and refuse to allow it to be sidelined or undervalued.

The Show That Revived My Worth

For three months, I poured my creativity, expertise, and passion into producing a 30-minute chart show. I cleaned, packaged, and elevated the musical experience for fans and artists alike, delivering a production that could rival any industry-standard broadcast. Yet, the compensation didn’t reflect the depth of effort, artistry, or value I brought to the project.

Meanwhile, the scriptwriter/voiceover artist I collaborated with earned 150% more than I did. Their justification? "Star power." At first, I convinced myself this was part of the process, that recognition would eventually come. But here’s the truth: recognition doesn’t arrive by accident. It requires a bold declaration that your work holds immense value.

The Power of Perspective

Reaching this turning point required seeing my contributions through two distinct lenses: as a producer and as a fan.

Producer Viewpoint

I saw a solid playlist that highlighted incredible homegrown talent, a brilliant showcase for artists who deserve the spotlight. The tweaks and adjustments I made along the way revealed the potential for this project to evolve into a cultural phenomenon. Yet, one glaring gap stood out: intentional promotion to fully engage fans.

Every element of production mattered. Quality was the core foundation. Without it, even the most talented artists would struggle to shine. My role wasn’t merely to produce a show, it was to craft an experience that celebrated these artists and made fans believe in their star power.

Fan Viewpoint

As a fan, I could feel the thrill of seeing my favorite artists on a chart show. Their presence meant progress, a career in motion. But fans want more than acknowledgment; they want moments that make them rally, cheer, and fight for their favorite stars.

A clean, polished production amplifies this excitement. It turns a simple chart show into a ritual, an event that fans anticipate and artists aspire to be part of. I made it clear: to maintain and elevate the quality, the production budget needed to reflect the value being delivered. My terms were set: 5x the current price, per episode.

This was my way of saying, “I see what I bring to the table, and it’s time everyone else does too.”

The Second Awakening

While I was navigating the undervaluation of my chart show work, another client entered the picture. This client came under the guise of friendship, handing me a project that, frankly, was worth far more than she was willing to pay. She had recently been promoted into a role she didn’t fully understand and asked for my consultation to help her perform at her best. The fee she offered? A fraction of what my expertise is worth.

I agreed to help with the initial project, believing I was extending a hand to a friend. But as the project progressed, I noticed something: the energy of the work was draining. I was operating under stressful circumstances, going above and beyond for someone who wasn’t meeting me halfway. When the time came for her to pay for the consultation, she hadn’t followed through, and I realized something critical. The stress, the discounted rate, and the lack of reciprocity wasn’t worth it.

So, I canceled the deal.

This reclaimed my time, my energy, and my self-respect. I made a decision then and there: I would no longer allow my skills and experience to be discounted, no matter the relationship. From this point forward, I’m treating my expertise with the respect it deserves.
